Ye Olde White Harte History

A Grade 2 Listed building with some parts dating back to the 13th century, the White Harte adds to the historical Cuckfield

The Beginning

What is now Good Evening Thai restraurant, is the original building with parts dating back to the 13th century. The brick walkway is one of the oldest parts.

1881

In the 1800s, an addition was added to the building - what is now the pub. You will see the date 1881 above a White Harte outside.

Peter Guard (right) was the owner, some say he still roams around the pub keeping an eye on things!

The War

Soldiers in the army visited the pub making many memories, and one solder, Charlie, wrote to The White Harte owner Peggy from his base in West Africa, writing about his many happy memories here (as seen below).

Dear Peggy

This letter will no doubt surprise you, its (been?) long since I last wrote. Do you still remember me? You may wonder why ever I should write now. Well, I was looking through some photographs this evening and came across some that were taken in Cuckfield. It set me thinking of those four months I spent there and of course my mind wondered back to that little room in the Old White Hart with all the boys drinking mild and bitter from pewter tankards and you decorating the place with your fair presence. Those days most certainly be the happiest I've had in the army and probably of my whole life. Never since have I met such a pub and such a crowd of blokes. Do you ever hear from any of them now? The only one I've kept good contact with is Charlie Gillow. He was in Italy for some time, but is now back in England.

1950s

What is now the games room was a community hub where clubs used to gather, referees for local football matches used as a changing room, and the hub for local cricket team.

2000s

Maintaining its' charm and reputation as a local historical pub , the White Harte Inn continues to be owned by locals and enjoyed by the community.

Today

And today - a cosy pub proud of its' history and serving the community, hosting local events and offering a place to stay if you need to stop off on your travels.

An ideal stop if you're on a walk, fancy a game of darts, watch sports, play some pool, or cosy up with a book by the fire.

Pop in and receive a friendly welcome from our team.
